95; passed suddenly but peacefully, May 22, 2017 in Virginia Beach, VA with his daughter Pamela by his side. Don was born 12/31/1921 in Detroit to John (Jack) and Lillie Sleep Hicks, the youngest of four brothers, all departed. He had started his apprenticeship as a tool and die maker at Ford Motor Co when WWII broke out. He joined the army and became a sea rescue PBY pilot, 1st Lt. After, he returned to Ford working and earning his degree at U of D in Mechanical Engineering. Degree in hand, he landed an engineering job with GM in their new Tech Center in Warren. He was with the Fisher Body Div. He and his beloved wife Mary Lee, children Pam and Steve, moved to Royal Oak where they thrived in a growing community. They were avid golfers, bridge players, travelers and immersed in the neighborhood and church. Don was smart, creative, industrious, kind and generous to all. He retired from GM at 62 after 30 years. Mary passed the end of 1986 just before the move to a new condo in Rochester Hills. Don later found happiness again and married Marjorie Hatherley who passed Jan 2016. He was also predeceased by his son Stephen in 1991. Left to cherish his memory is his daughter Pamela Philbrick of Virginia Beach; grandson Jeffrey Allen Philbrick, wife Karen and great granddaughters Allison and Mary of Alna, ME; granddaughter Kristen Lee Eichler, husband Jeff and great grandsons Henry and Truman of Louisville, KY. A private memorial will be held in the future placing him next to Mary at Oakview Cemetery in Royal Oak. A webpage was created at where he was cremated to share your memories.
