Donald "Don" Merritt Stanfield, 76, of Burtonville, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loved ones.
Don was born at home on June 17, 1938 in Tollesboro, Ky, to the late Estill Stanfield and Rena Hughes Stanfield. He was named after the doctor who delivered him, Dr. C.C. Merritt.
In his younger days, Don was an avid fox hunter. He drove a milk truck from 1961 until 1974, delivering to Carnation Company in Maysville, milked cows and raised many crops of tobacco, hay and corn. Don loved bluegrass music and was considered one of the best banjo players of his time. He was also a talented artist, drawing and painting pictures for family and friends and once drew the cover for a book of a local author. Never venturing far from home, Don enjoyed the simple things in life such as working his mules, tending to his Herford cattle and his sheep, listening to bluegrass music and having his family near by. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Phyllis Ann Osborne Stanfield; one daughter, Tammi Darrell (Jackie) Boling of Flemingsburg; three sons, Donald Brett (Dee) Stanfield, Darren Scott (Beverly) Stanfield and Brian Kelly (Dana) Stanfield all of Burtonville; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Ricky Stanfield of Tollesboro and Frankie Stanfield of Burtonville; and 2 sisters, Anita Walker of Tollesboro and Janice Tomes of Mays Lick. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Darrell Wayne Stanfield.
The family is honoring Don's request to be cremated. Burial will take place in the Burtonville Cemetery at a time to be determined by his family. Barbour & Son Funeral Home of Tollesboro caring for the arrangements.
