Donald McKay Hughes passed away August 26th 2017 at the age of 86 surrounded by family.

Don was born on May 14, 1931 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to Peter and Elizabeth Hughes. He was the oldest child and had three siblings Douglas, John, and Dorothy. Don met the love of his life, Heather Lyla Meiklejohn as a teenager and they married on August 8, 1951 in Edmonton. Don worked for the railroad in Canada to support his family until the cold weather got to be too much for them. Don and Heather moved their family to Portland Oregon in 1960 for warmer weather and better opportunities. Don worked for the railroad, UTLX tank Car Company and then Linnton Plywood Mill until he retired.

In Portland, Don and Heather bought a home in St. Johns and raised their family, they later moved to property in the west hills. So many wonderful times were had with his grandkids on the farm from big family dinners, to cherished holiday gatherings, card games around the table, tractor rides, chasing each other around the pool table, playing bar tender with Shirley Temples, his famous Mickey Mouse pancakes, and the countless memories feeding and raising many animals from chickens to cows and a stinker of a goose named honker that he had to chase all over the yard to protect his grandkids.

After his wife Heather passed away suddenly in 1993 Don moved to Troy Oregon. In Troy he spent time hunting, fishing, riding horses, taking care of his farm, enjoying great times with friends and family and volunteering for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Dons favorite time of the year was the summer and fall when his kids, grandkids, great grandkids and friends would come up and stay for weeks at a time. He would take them to the Grande Ronde River to swim, fish, and catch crawdads, trips to Wallowa Lake to catch trout and picnic, hours on end riding his four wheeler's, and so many treasured hours rattlesnake, grouse, bear, cougar, deer and elk hunting. If you visited Don at any time through his life you probably helped him with a "project". He enjoyed teaching his grandkids responsibility by having them help do the daily chores or projects around the farm.

Don moved to Vancouver, Washington with Pat and Shelley in 2010. They were able to take care of his every need and want from Doctor Appointments to special baked deserts, boy did he love his sweets. He shared in countless family gatherings, fishing adventures, graduations, and attended every event possible for his great grandkids. He also loved spending special time with his little buddy playing games on the Wii.

Don was deeply loved by so many and will be truly missed. His many fishing stories and secret hunting spots by the green gate will be cherished forever.

Don is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Barbara Hughes; daughter and son-in-law, Shelley and Pat Novak; son and daughter-in-law, Cameron and Rachell; grandchildren and their spouses, Holly (Kevin), Amy (Scott), Brenda (Troy), Todd (Beth), and Justin; and great-grandchildren, Jake, Kaylee, Carson, Cadence, Cathán, Bryce, Drake, and Aubrey. He was preceded in death by his wife, Heather.
