Donald R. VanHorn, age 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 23 at Fairfield Medical Center. Born in Lancaster, Ohio, Dad was the president of both his Senior Class and National Honor Society chapter at Lancaster High School in 1947. He was a varsity letter winner in baseball and basketball in his high school years. Don went on to earn a degree in finance from Ohio University in 1951 and one month after graduation Donald married the love of his life, the late Shirley Freeland. Don and Shirley were able to celebrate their 65 wedding anniversary just last year. Don was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and was assigned to work in the Counter-Intelligence Corp (CIC) out of Fort Dix, New Jersey, during the Korean War. After his military service, Don and Shirley moved to Columbus where Don began a long 33 year career with the General Electric Company (GE) in sales and management. Don's positions with the company took him and his family to Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Greensboro, North Carolina. Don retired from GE in 1989 and he and Shirley spent many relaxing years golfing and visiting with family and friends in Greensboro. They decided to return to Lancaster in 2006 and enjoyed living their last few years in the company of their native community, including siblings, nieces, and nephews that supported them to the fullest. Don is preceded in death by his mother and father, Doris and Harry VanHorn and wife Shirley (Freeland) VanHorn. He is survived by sons Greg (Pam)VanHorn and Guy (Bobbi) VanHorn; grandchildren Rocky (Abby) VanHorn, Joseph VanHorn, Rebecca (Keith) Colcord, Kendra VanHorn, Rachel VanHorn, and Renee VanHorn; great-grandchildren Kathryn VanHorn and Jacob VanHorn. Don is also survived by his sister Donna Burnworth, brother and sister in law Carrol and Margaret VanHorn, and sister-in law Carol Ety. A celebration of life will be held at the Bickford Senior Living Center, 1834 Countryside Drive on Thursday, July 20th from 7:00- 9:00 p.m. A private family service will take place on Thursday, July 20th at Forest Rose Cemetery.
