Donald Randall Jones passed away peacefully from this life on January 9, 2018 and was warmly greeted in heaven by his Savior and reunited with the love of his life Jean. Donald was born in Sanford, Florida on April 24, 1923 to Thomas William and Alice Jones and was the younger of two boys. A lifelong Sanford resident, Donald attended Seminole High School and graduated in 1941. He attended the University of Florida in the fall of 1941 and entered WWII in 1942 with the Army Air Corps. During the war, he was a member of the 345th Squadron of the 500th Bomb Group and spent most of his time in the Southwest Pacific theater in the Philippines, New Guinea and in the China Sea. Following the war, he came home and began his lifelong career in agriculture and the citrus industry with Chase & Company. Donald married his beloved Jean Alberta Whigham on June 28, 1947 at Holy Cross Episcopal Church.
Donald loved to travel and along with Jean, took numerous trips throughout England, Europe and Australia. They especially enjoyed meeting and spending time with Donald's English relatives. He was also quite a "foodie" and was always trying new cuisine and would take the family on long summer driving trips around the country.
Donald was very active with his church Holy Cross having served on the Vestry as well as the Boy Scout Troop 501 and with his sons. He was a lifelong Rotary Club member where he was president and received the Paul Harris Award. Following retirement, he became very active with his WWII 345th Squadron reunions and cherished spending time with them around the country.
Donald was predeceased by his parents, his older brother Thomas Jones (who died at age 3), his wife Jean and a daughter-in-law Lisa Koch Jones. He is survived by his sons Thomas F. Jones and wife Tanna; Donald R. Jones, Jr. (Randy) and wife Marwee; James W. Jones and wife Bonnie; and grandchildren Tommy and wife Meredith Jones of Jacksonville, FL. and Kari Jones of New York, NY; Jenny and Danny Mastin of Lexington, VA. and Lauren Jones of Charleston, SC; and Graham and husband Toben Cocklin, Tyler Jones and Mallory Jones, all of Dallas, TX. He is also survived by great grandchildren Alden and Ellie Mastin and Leila, Hannah and Rhea Jones; his nephew Les Guthrie and wife Elise of Orlando, FL.; and his English cousins Carol and Tony Haley and Norma Franks.
Services will be held at Holy Cross Episcopal Church at 405 South Park Avenue in Sanford, Fl. at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 20, 2018. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Holy Cross Episcopal Church.
