Doris Louisa (Speake) Johnston, 95, passed away on November 18, 2017 in Nacogdoches, TX. She was born November 23, 1921, to Ruth Bussard Speake and Thomas Paul Speake, in Washington, DC. She had one older brother, Thomas Stanley, who predeceased her. She attended school there, graduating from McKinley High in 1939. She first attended William and Mary University, and later graduated with a degree in chemistry from Purdue.

She went to work for Esso (now Exxon) in New Jersey, where she met her future and only husband, Robert K. Johnson, as they worked together there developing additives for fuels for tanks and airplanes for the War Effort. They married June 2, 1945, and lived in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and later in Lake Hiawatha. After moving to Memphis, they were blessed with their first born--Lucinda, in 1947. They moved to Downers Grove, a suburb of Chicago. Michael Paul was born in 1949, Ray Thomas in 1951, and Carl Robert in 1955; The family moved to San Antonio in 1956, where Doris lived until 2015. She and Bob divorced in 1976. The family attended the Methodist Church there, and Doris was also involved in Cub Scouts, the Democratic Party, local politics, and a variety of other organizations.

When the children were older, she began teaching high school math and chemistry in 1989 for 10 years, mostly in Castroville, Texas.

Oldest son Mike was killed in 1976. Carl resides in Atlanta, Georgia, with his wife Melissa. Ray lives in Nacogdoches, Texas, with wife Jenny, and Luci still lives in San Antonio with husband Milton "Butch" Alvis. Grandchildren include Rebecca Johnston (Austin), Tyler Johnston (wife Cody and greatgrandchildren Azalie and Rosalynn, Denton), Catie Mungia (husband Enrique, Nacogdoches), Greg Johnston (Atlanta), and Angelica Alvis (Austin).

Doris enjoyed pets, music, and sewing for her children. She taught piano lessons in her home and played violin with the San Antonio Community Symphony for many years. She traveled the world with Bob, including Japan, USSR, Germany, and others.

A graveside service will be conducted by her family on November 24, 2017 at 3:00 pm in Mission Burial Park North in San Antonio, TX. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her well and loved her.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches, Texas. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Child Fund International or a charity of your choice.
