Dorothy Brown Gantt was born in Salisbury, NC April 11, 1920, youngest child to William Addison and Lottie Cauble Brown. She was a graduate of Boyden High School, valedictorian class of '36 and UNC-G class of '40. She taught school in Gastonia and Salisbury for several years.
On July 17, 1942 she married Melvin Spencer Gantt who died December 10, 1997. She was also preceded by her parents and siblings Dodd Brown, Wllie Almeta B. Goodman and Mildred B. Albright and a son-in-law Marvin D. Johnson.
Surviving are three daughters and their families, Judith G. Johnson of Davidson, NC, Drake and Katherine Whitton-Johnson and great-grandson Beau of Charlotte, Spencer and Katie Johnson of Durham. Rebecca G and Chuck Roediger of Bermuda Run, Laurian Roediger of Lexington, Kentucky, Charles Roediger III of Winston-Salem. Lynn G and Bill Kay of Charlotte, Sarah Kay of Charleston.
Through the years she was active in Girl Scouts, PTA, Salvation Army Girls Club, Board of Lees McRae College in Banner Elk, several bridge clubs, and Augsburg Lutheran church where she was past president of WELCA, a life member of the missionary society and Southern Seminary Auxiliary and a member of The Altar Guild for many years. A family service of entombment will be at the Memorial Chapel of Forsyth Mausoleum. A memorial service of celebration will be held at Augsburg Lutheran Church on Monday Dec. 18, 2017 at 1 pm. The family will greet friends after the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gantt-Goodman Scholarship fund at Lenoir Rhyne University, Hickory, NC, Augsburg Lutheran Church, or a charity of the donor's choice. The family wished to thank the staff, nurses and care givers at Arbor Acres for their love and support over the years to our mother.
