Dorothy Irene Hansen was born September 24, 1931 to Fred and Irene "Drake" Bliss on a farm house south of Inavale, NE. She departed this life on Monday, February 03, 2014 at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud, NE at the age of 82 years. Dorothy attended a country school, District #70 from kindergarten through the 8th grade. Her high school years she attended Red Cloud High. Dorothy was an excellent student especially in English, writing, reading and art. Dorothy used her art talents (drawing and painting) most of her adult life. In addition, she became an exceptional seamstress and had a home sewing business for many years. Dorothy met her future husband, Lester Hansen during her junior year of high school. After graduation, she attended Hastings College and received her teaching certificate. She taught school while Lester enlisted in the United States Army for two years. After his return, they married on June 18, 1950. Dorothy became a full time farm wife and homemaker. A daughter Kyla Denise was born to the couple on June 2, 1951 and their son Kendall Dale was born on September 24, 1954 on his mother's birthday. Dorothy, in addition to being a full time homemaker and mother was a 4-H leader for her children's 4-H club for many years. After Kyla and Kendall grew up, Dorothy wanted to work outside her home. For almost 19 years she was tour guide for the Willa Cather Museum. She retired at the age of 65. In November of 1991 Lester and Dorothy moved off the farm and into Red Cloud. The couple did a little traveling, especially making visits to Cozad, NE to see their daughter and only grandson, Brian. As they grew older, both Lester and Dorothy were plagued with health problems. She took care of Lester at home for several years, but at the age of 81 Lester moved to Heritage of Red Cloud. Dorothy had a stroke in 2013 and she too went to live at Heritage until her death. Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband and parents. She is survived by her daughter Kyla Wilson and fiancé Doug Brooks of Kearney, NE; son Kendall Hansen of Red Cloud, NE; grandson Brian Wilson of Aurora, CO; brother Fred Bliss and wife Mary of Davis, CA; three nephews: Michael Bliss and wife Gina and their children: Michael, Christina and Amelia of Needham, MA; Allen Bliss and wife Kathleen and their boys: Charles and Elliot of Parkhurst, IL and Jordan Bliss of Verona, WI; George Campbell of Chicago, IL, Mara Campbell of Lake Zurich, IL; sister-in-law Florence Nelson of Lincoln, NE, many in laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held this Friday 1:00 PM February 7, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Red Cloud, NE. Rev. Joel Rathbun will be officiating. Burial will be held in the Red Cloud Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at wmsfh.com. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association or United Methodist Church.
