Dorothy Mae Young McCarron, 95, of Tallahassee, Florida, passed away peacefully while surrounded by family at her home on October 14, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis John "Mac," and her son, Timothy Arthur. Dottie & Mac had four sons and three daughters, 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Dorothy was born in Mason City, IL on July 14, 1922, and was raised in Edmond, OK. She was the youngest of five children, two boys and three girls born to Nellie Mae and Clinton Young. In high school she played the snare drum in the school band and in her senior year competition they won the state championship. She was in the National Honor Society, won the Spelling Bee for her school district, played on the basketball team and was the school champion in badminton and ping pong. She graduated as Salutatorian of her class.

After graduation she moved to Washington, DC, where she worked for the War Department and was attached to the Manhattan Project. While there she met Mac, an employee of the FBI. He entered the US Army and before going to fight the war in Europe they married at Fort Sill, OK, on August 25, 1944. After the war, she and Mac, by then a Special Agent in the FBI, began their family, living in many towns in the northeast and southwest before returning to Florida in 1960, living in Miami, Homestead and then Kendall until 1982 when the family moved to Tallahassee.

She was an avid reader, worked as a volunteer editor, volunteered with Lighthouse of the Big Bend, and the Alzheimer's Association. She was an Advanced Master Gardener as was easily seen in her yard and home. Her greatest love was caring for her family. Often she proudly said, "The best garden I ever grew was my family."

She was preceded in death by her husband and son, Timothy. Survivors include her children, Patrick & Diana McCarron of Marietta, GA; Michael & Cheryl McCarron of Tallahassee; Daniel & Cassandra McCarron of Tallahassee; Kathleen McCarron of Tallahassee; Maureen & Michael Meeks of Fairbanks, AK; and Erin O'Connell of Tallahassee.
