Dorothy "Dot" Townsend was born February 28, 1921, in Sherman, MS, to Rev. H. G.West Sr. and Ethel Pitts West. She passed from this earthly life to her heavenly reward on February 19, 2017, at NMMC Hospice in Tupelo.

She was predeceased by her parents, her siblings: Evelyn West Roberson, Broughton West, Mabel West Browning, Annie Mae West Graddy, and Rev. H. G. West, Jr. She was also predeceased by her husband James Charles Simmons in 1964, and her husband Dr. George G. Townsend in 1976.

Dot graduated from Ecru High School and attended Blue Mountain College for two years, studying elementary education. She then taught school in Sherman, MS, where she met and married James "Jim" Simmons. Their marriage was blessed with two children, James Michael "Mike" Simmons and Dorothy Susan "Susie" Simmons. The family lived in various cities over the years, including Cabot, Forrest City, and West Helena, Arkansas, as well as Jackson, MS. They were living in West Helena at the time of Jim's death, but Dot later moved back to Jackson where she had many friends and several family members. During that time, she met and married Dr George G. Townsend from Forest, MS, and moved there with him in 1971. After his death in 1976, she returned to Jackson where she remained until she moved to Traceway Retirement in Tupelo.

Affectionately called "Mama Dot" by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, she was a devout Christian from an early age, a devoted wife and mother who deeply loved her family and treasured her friends, of whom there were so many. She was a gracious hostess ,a competitive bridge player, and an avid golfer. She loved to watch sports on television, and was a devoted Mississippi State fan.

Dot was always active in the Baptist faith, since her father was a Baptist minister . She worked in Sunday School, missions groups, and taught kindergarten in several Baptist churches over the years. . As a young woman, she was selected as Miss Ecru in the local beauty pageant; however, her father, with his stern Baptist roots, would not allow her to participate in the next level of the state pageant, because she would have to wear a bathing suit on stage! That was always one of the lighter things that her family kidded about! At the time of her death, Dot was a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church in Tupelo, the place where her father served as the second church pastor in the 1930's During her life, Mama Dot touched the lives of many children and adults in a positive way. Through her example, she shared her love of life and her love for God with her family and her many friends.

Those who remain to cherish her memory are: son, Mike Simmons(Kay) of West Point, MS; daughter, Susie Begly(Russ) of Ephrata, PA; grandchildren, Jay Simmons, Cheryl Simmons Barnett(Steven), Jon Simmons(Holly); Bill Eberle(Carissa); and Jennifer Eberle Bower(Brian); nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
