Duane Eugene Utley, of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away peacefully after a long battle with diabetes and its complications in Houston, Texas on Saturday, June 17, 2017. He was 72 years old. He and his wife shared many adventures in Oregon, his childhood home, and throughout Alaska.

A camping and fishing aficionado, he taught his kids important life skills like how to start a campfire after a week of solid rain, and how to properly clean and pan-fry a fresh-caught rainbow trout. After spending most of the last forty years of his life in Alaska working as an engineer for General Electric, he opted for a warmer climate in Texas. Duane is survived by his wife, Ellen Utley and son, Michael Utley, of Anchorage, Alaska; his daughter, Julie Shehata, of Spring, Texas; and his brothers, Daren and Mike Utley, of Lebanon, Oregon. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation for his caretaker, Debbie McCloud, who spent many hours caring for Duane in Texas and truly became a sister to Ellen and Duane during her sojourn with the family.

A Celebration of Life is planned for August 7, 2017, at Waterloo Baptist Church in Waterloo, Oregon. All friends and family are invited to attend and remember Duane with stories and fond memories. Please contact Duane's son, Michael Utley, for more information (Michael.D.Utley@usace.army.mil).
