Duane Roger Thompson, the son of Nels and Nora (Vorland) Thompson, was born June 16, 1928, on a farm southeast of Eagle Grove in Wright County, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, attending Pineview country school and graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1946. He then began farming with his father until entering the military.

Duane served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict from January 8, 1951 until his honorable discharge in October 27, 1954.

On June 1, 1958, Duane was united in marriage with Phyllis E. Pfantz in State Center, Iowa. The couple made their home in Eagle Grove and raised three children: Tony, Jenny and Scott. Phyllis preceded him in death on September 7, 1999.

Duane worked for Hanson Machine Shop for 11 years and for Oldson's Plumbing for 33 years.

Duane was a member of the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Duane enjoyed taking his boat to any lake with great fishing. He could spend hours in his workshop on various woodworking projects. Every fall he looked forward to going hunting with his nephews. Duane was always happy to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Duane passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Careage of Clarion, at the age of 83 years. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gaylord, Thealburn "Tal" and Stanley and sister, Anna.
