E. Marie Bale, age 100, of Burdett, NY, passed away Friday, October 24, at Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls, NY.

Marie was born on July 3, 1914, in Bennettsburg, NY, the daughter of the late Ralph and Susie (Rosekrans) Sackett. In her early years she lived on a farm and later moved to Burdett with her mother and her sister Josephine Sackett Stilwell. Marie graduated from Watkins Glen High School and married Robert O. Bale, Jr., on February 1, 1936, in Waverly, NY. Marie and Bob moved to Rhode Island shortly after their marriage and returned to New York in 1944, where they lived in Ithaca and Cayuta before moving to Burdett in 1948. In addition to raising her family full time, Marie worked in Rothchild's Department Store in Ithaca for many years. Marie lived her faith and was always an active church member. She helped establish a Presbyterian Church in Rhode Island and was a member of the Cayuta Free Church and the Burdett United Methodist Church. In later years she and Bob attended the Odessa Baptist Church. Marie played piano and sang alto in church choirs and community choruses. She was a member of the Burdett Wednesday Afternoon Club. Marie loved animals and always had a dog or cat. Her home and family were by far the most important things to her, and she was always one to whom people turned when they had problems. She was a good listener who never violated a confidence and who had a lifetime of experience from which she was able to give wise and worthwhile advice. Marie was always there to support her extended family and friends tirelessly, wisely, and well.

Marie is survived by her two daughters, Sandra Marie Gessford of North Canaan, Connecticut, and Patti Jean Venturini of Cortland, NY, and husband Mario; grandchildren Jean Marie Gessford of Danbury, Connecticut, Stephen Alessandro Venturini of Montreal, Canada, and his wife Rowena, Justin Daniel Venturini of Cortland, NY; granddaughter-in-law Judith Gessford of Simsbury, Connecticut; great-grandchildren Molly Gessford of Cambridge, Massachusetts, David M. Gessford of Simsbury, Connecticut, Alessandro, Sara, and Cristiano da Silva and Francesca Medina, all of Danbury, Connecticut, Sophia and Matteo Venturini of Montreal, Canada, and many dear nieces. In addition to her parents, Marie was predeceased by her husband Robert O. Bale, Jr., son-in-law David W. Gessford, grandson Michael Bale Gessford and sister Josephine Stilwell.
