E. Ruth Smith (nee Thompson): December 12, 1924 - January 27, 2018
Beloved wife of husband George W. Smith (d. 2012) for 65 years
Dear mother of Scott (Roxanne) Smith, Jack (Barbara) Smith, and Cindy (Paul) Carney
Loving grandmother of Kate, Sam, Colleen, and Michael
A member of "The Greatest Generation," Ruth will be dearly missed. Ruth will always be remembered for her fiery wit, dedication to her lifelong friends (including the 'Kindergarten Club') and neighbors and ardent devotion to the loves of her life: her husband and WWII veteran George "Bud" Smith; her three children and their spouses; her four wonderful grandchildren; and the Chicago Cubs.
Ruth was born in 1924, an only child to Raymond and Edna Mabel Thompson. A true Chicago north sider, she attended Palmer Elementary School then North Park High School. Attending school reunions was always a highlight for her throughout the years. After high school graduation, Ruth briefly attended Cornell College in Iowa. She and Bud, her childhood friend turned high school sweetheart, wed in 1947 after he returned from the war. The family is extremely grateful to have many memories from that time, including letters Bud wrote Ruth during his deployment in the Pacific during WWII. They were perfectly matched partners in life, just as they were on the dance floor of the Aragon Ballroom.
After their third child was born, they decided to move to the northern suburbs to raise their family. Ruth was forever active in the kids' schools, Cub Scouts, Bluebirds, little league, and kept busy working at Marshall Fields in Vernon Hills. All her life, Ruth was a wonderful friend to all and maintained a wide network of close friends, fellow bridge players, and neighbors whom she cared for deeply. Forever in our hearts, we cherish the memories of Ruth's positive outlook and contagious laugh. We are also grateful that she lived to see her beloved Cubs win the World Series.
Visitation will be from 11-12 on Wednesday, January 31 at Oehler Funeral Home in Des Plaines, IL. Interment will be private. Ruth's family wishes to thank friends and families for thoughts and prayers during this celebration of Ruth's life. They also extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of The Birches and Brookdale Senior Living, for their loving care of Ruth and family for the past several years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ruth's memory to the Alzheimer's Association or the Purple Heart Foundation.
