Edward Joseph "Ed" Vana, 99, of Stuarts Draft, VA, formerly of Bishops, CA, and originally from Long Island, NY, passed away December 14, 2015 at a local nursing home. He was born on July 12, 1916 in East Islip, NY, a son of the late Joseph and Josephine Vana. Ed was the eldest of four children, three boys and a girl.
The majority of Ed's career was spent as an aircraft controls designer for the Grumman Aircraft Corporation in Bethpage, NY, but also he took a temporary assignment to design the control systems for the Gulfstream research submarine for Grumman in West Palm Beach, FL during the late 1960's. Ed's final assignment was to assist in the design for the Navy's newest fighter jet, the F-14 Tomcat in Thousand Oaks, CA. In 1974, he retired and he and beloved wife of 51 years, Muriel moved to Bishop to enjoy fishing and the quiet rural countryside. During retirement, Ed stayed active in the Mason's, the BPOE, the local Civil Air Patrol, and his local church, where he become member of the singles group after his wife's passing in 1995. He was also an honorary member of Bishop's local VFW chapter, due to his efforts designing the Navy's aircraft during World War II. Ed loved playing golf and he was an avid woodworker. He would always be found tinkering with some new project out in his tool shed. In 2010, Ed moved to Stuarts Draft to be near his daughter, Terry, so she could help manage his affairs as he aged. Ed will be truly missed not only by his loving family, but by also the many friends who came to know him throughout his life.
In addition to his wife and parents, Ed was preceded in death by his brother and sister. Survivors include his son, Bruce Vana and wife, Kim; his daughter, Terry Doty and husband, Mike; five grandchildren, Mark, Pam, Tiffaney, Shelley, and Cindy; five great-grandchildren, Hannah, Emma, Ethan, Joseph, and Samantha; a brother, Joseph Vana; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Following cremation, Ed will be interred in Bishop at East Line Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Bishop.
