Edward Louis Dietert, lovingly known by family as "Grandpa" or "Unkie" peacefully went to be with the Lord on January 10, 2018 after a brief hospital stay in San Antonio, Texas.
He was the eldest of two children born to the late Adolph and Laura Dietert on January 17, 1929 in San Marcos, Texas and was a proud graduate of San Marcos High School. When Edward was 18, his mother died of a heart attack and Edward stayed to raise his 9-year old brother, David, while he helped his father work on and maintain a 100-acre farm in San Marcos.
Edward was drafted into the army in 1952, when he was 23 years old. He served two years as a cook in the Korean War and joined the Civil Service as a cook in 1958. Edward retired from the Civil Service in 1999.
On New Year's Eve 1957, Edward went with a friend to K.T. Dance Hall on Austin Highway in San Antonio, Texas. While there, he met his future love, Lorene Syamken. They continued to date and on June 10, 1958, Edward proposed to Lorene, after asking her father's permission for her hand in marriage. They married on October 4, 1958 at United Martin Lutheran Church in Shiner, Texas and remained happily married for 59 years and raised three children.
The legacy Edward left was the legacy of grace and unselfishness. He had the ultimate servant's heart and gave of himself until he had nothing else to give. He loved God and enjoyed singing, gardening, listening and dancing to polka music, being with his family, and telling precious stories of times past. He also enjoyed repairing all sorts of things in his own unique way.
He was a founding member of Abundant Life Church in San Antonio and volunteered his time and service when and where needed.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Laura Dietert, his brother, David Dietert and grandson, Brenden Dietert.
Edward will forever be remembered by his beloved children Beverly Moss and husband L.C., Brenda Dietert and Michael Dietert and wife Beth Rosin-Dietert, treasured grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with countless friends and family whom were blessed to have known him.
Edward touched the lives of many people with his gracious generosity and maintained his sense of humor all the way to the end. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Edward's life with a viewing to be held at 6:00 p.m., Monday, January 15, 2018 at Sunset Funeral Home with the funeral service to be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at 12:00 p.m.
The family requests donations be sent to the military veteran program of your choice.
