ONEONTA - Edward Paul (Papa) Hogan 83, passed away unexpectedly Aug 16th, 2017.
A life long resident of Oneonta, born February 15th, 1934 to Raymond Francis and Madeline (Egglestine) Hogan of Oneonta.
He graduated from Oneonta High School where he sang in school musicals and State choir competitions.
He worked in The City Drug Store where he met his future bride, Nancy (Southern). They were married on September 11th, 1960. After years in the Men's Department of Bresee's, he began his career of 27 years at SUCO as a custodian.
He was a 3rd Degree member and Treasurer of the Knights of Columbus for many years. He enjoyed calling and serving Texas Hots with Nancy on Bingo nights.
In 1972 he became Assistant Scout Master of Troop 111, sponsored by St. Mary's in Oneonta. A Boy Scout leader for 44 years he held positions with the Troop, District, and Council serving on several committees as a member and chairman. For over 30 years he was the Camp Commissioner at the council summer camp on Crumhorn Mountain. Upon nomination by the local Council and with the approval of the National Court of Honor, he was honored Distinguished Service by receiving the Silver Beaver Award. The Silver Beaver is an award given to those who implement the Scouting program and who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council through hard work, self-sacrifice, dedication, and many years of service.
He enjoyed crochet making and donating afghans, hats, scarves and mittens to Fox Hospital and Family Services for decades. Countless crochet hats were sported by Scout Leaders at the winter camporee, a different color each year.
He enjoyed retirement and his grandchildren...always a fan at OHS Football and Baseball games. The Team received crocheted hats and mittens for the cheerleaders too!
Ed volunteered with the Fox Hospital Auxiliary for over 20 years.
