Lift your hearts and share with the Zellars family. God wanted Guy Zellars and set him free to go the gates of heaven. Guy passed on October 7, 2017 at 10:30a.m. An American Veteran, Guy was born in Rising Star, Texas on November 14, 1922 to Fred Hershel Zellars and Linnie Lucy Lane. Guy graduated from Rising Star High school. He moved to Odessa, Texas in July of 1941. Guy worked for Humble Service Station as a sales rep. He joined the Army on October 24, 1942. He was assigned to the 91st Bomb Squadron in late May 1943. He was sent to Stone, England. Ten days later he was sent to Bassingbourne, England. He was discharged on October 31, 1945 with the rank of Sergeant. Guy had the great fortune of marrying his best friend and lifelong partner Mary Juanita Zellars on September 14, 1947. They were married by Jimmy Dolan at Second Baptist Church. He worked for Exxon for 42 years as an Electrician and retired on March 1, 1986. Guy returned to the U.K. to visit the still-functioning bomber base at Bassingbourne, reconnecting with friends he had made while stationed there.
In 2003, Guy was honored with a commemorative plaque on the original control tower at Bassingbourne, placed with names of his fellow airman who served so bravely and honorably. Guy and Juanita were Founding Members of the Midland/Odessa Commemorative Air Force ( formerly Confederate Air Force) and spent hundreds of satisfying hours raising funds for, and restoring dozens of historic WWII aircrafts in collaboration with other CAF Chapters throughout the country. On Juanita's passing the Desert Squadron Flight Deck was dedicated to them. Guy enjoyed fishing, square dancing, and traveling. Guy is survived by his daughters Mary Lynne and Mona Johns; brother Horace "Tuffy" Zellars, sister Sybil Joe Leonard, sister-in-law Evelyn Zellars and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 13, 2017 from 5:00p.m. to 7:30p.m. Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 1:30p.m. First Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Wash, Officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
