Elizabeth Ann (Betty) McKool passed away peacefully on January 11, 2018 in Dallas, Texas. She was born Elizabeth Ann Raney in Dallas on August 3, 1929 to Alfred and Sadie Raney.

Raised in Dallas, Betty was admired for her striking beauty as well as her outgoing and generous personality. At age 16, she fell in love with and married Mike McKool, who had just returned from the harrowing experience of being shot down from his B24 bomber over Yugoslavia, where he spent 28 days behind enemy lines, an ordeal chronicled in "The Forgotten 500." Betty and Mike remained devoted to each other until Mike passed away in 2003, after 57 years of marriage.

The couple had four children. Mike Jr., Mollie, and Matt survive her, while Mitzi passed away in June 2017 of pancreatic cancer, an anguishing event for Betty. Betty also is survived by 17 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, all of whom affectionately called her "Cracker," as well as her beloved sister Frances.

From her first day until her last, Betty was giving and big-hearted. She showed kindness and deference to everyone, regardless of station. Betty and Mike were fixtures in Dallas Democratic politics from the 1940s through the 1980s. Betty founded and served as president of the Democratic Women of Dallas. Her close friend was former Governor Ann Richard; together they produced a series of well-loved Christmas cards that exhibited the keen wit shared by the pair.

A memorial service will be held for Betty at noon on January 17 at Sparkman Hillcrest, 7405 W. Northwest Highway. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions in her memory may be made to The Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation at myotonic.org.
