Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Smith was born January 27, 1931, in Berkeley, California.
She was the only daughter of John and Alice Escobar, She was proceeded in death by her three
brothers, John, Edwin and Edward. She met the love of her life, Charles Kennith Smith (Ken) at a dance in Rodeo, California and they were married in 1950. Charles was a soldier in the U.S.Army stationed in Texas, Germany and Maryland. Their oldest son Kennith was born in Paso Robles, California and their other four children, Betty, Edwin, Philip and Erick were born in Frankfurt, Germany.
Days off in Germany were spent roaming the countryside or dancing at the NCO club. Betty and her husband settled in Fresno in 1968 when Ken retired from the Army. After living in army quarters for years, Betty was excited to be able to paint her house and walls something other than basic beige and her house was the bright blue house on the block. When she wasn't tending to her family, Betty loved to read and could often be found with a book. She also loved to bake and rarely used a recipe. At one time, she worked at a bakery in Kileen, Texas where she learned to decorate cakes. Her cakes were legendary from big birthday cake ships to beautifully decorated wedding cakes for friends and family. We will miss her coffee cakes that she would whip up on a Saturday morning. Betty returned to work when her children were teenagers and worked for Mini Mops as a supervisor for over twenty years, retiring at age 70. Betty loved nothing more than being with her family. She loved big family get togethers. She was so proud of her ten grand children and five great grand daughters. We will miss her dearly but are comforted by the thought that she is reunited with the love of her life and is dancing with him again.
