Elizabeth C. Pellegrini, 98, a long-time resident of Killingworth died peacefully on Sunday, November 20, 2016.

Betty was born in 1918 in New Haven where she enjoyed exploring the art and architecture of the city on long walks as a child. As a young woman, while working as a caretaker for the children of a local family, the errant toss of a football from an adjoining yard would change the course of Betty's life. When Betty threw the football back over the fence, she "bopped" a handsome young man - her future husband - in the head. She and George Pellegrini married eighty-one years ago.

After their marriage and arrival of their son, George Jr. (Budzie), they moved to Madison where George, Sr.'s endeavors included running a cobbler shop. After a short stint at Pond's cosmetics factory, Betty attained her LPN license, working in a local nursing home and subsequently as a trusted private duty nurse for many Madison families. Betty spoke with fondness of living in Madison, thoroughly enjoying visiting the beach as often as possible, but also described the challenges of the war years (rationing coupons, blackout regulations, collecting metal for the war effort) as well as serving as a volunteer atop the Hand Academy rooftop, scanning the sky for enemy aircraft.

The family purchased a home in Killingworth, working diligently to renovate the house and establish a bountiful vegetable garden and abundant flowerbeds. At the urging of a local general practitioner, she and her husband ultimately made their residence a private nursing home where patients became like family.

Betty was well read, a music, art, and antiques lover, friend to animals and birds, and the best wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma, aunt and dog-sitter ever.

She is survived, and will be greatly missed by, Ann Pellegrini, Tom Houpert, Amy Blair, Wendy Blair, Chris Steines, Frances Callan, Dolores Redpath, many beloved nieces and nephews, extended family, friends, and avid fans of Betty. She was predeceased by husband George Pellegrini, son and daughter-in-law George C. and Wendy Pellegrini, brother Michael Callan, sister and brother-in-law Margaret and Frank Woodbury, and all of George, Sr.'s nine siblings.

A special thank you to caretaker Vivian and niece Karan Harger for your devoted care and attention to Betty.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at 11:00 am at West Cemetery in Madison, CT. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Literacy Volunteers Valley Shore CT, Inc., 61 Goodspeed Drive, Westbrook, CT, 06498.
