Elizabeth "Betty" Lou (LaChance) Tibbetts, 79, formerly of Ellington, devoted wife of the late Harold Richards Tibbetts, passed away on Friday, September 6, 2013. Born on September 25, 1933 in Biddeford, Maine, the daughter of the late Lewis and Agnes (Pollard) Lachance. Growing up, Betty was a tom-boy who loved climbing trees and playing sports. She met Harold when they were in elementary school. As teenagers, they would go to the Friday night cowboy movies at the City Theatre in Biddeford with the crowd. Betty graduated from Thornton Academy, Class of 1952. She attended Lasell Junior College Auburndale where she earned an Associate of Arts Degree and then went on to obtain her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education in 1956 from the University of Maine. Betty was a respected, devoted teacher who began her career in Brewer and Scarborough, Maine before she and Harold settled in Connecticut where Betty continued to teach for 29 years at McDonough School in Hartford and was recognized as Teacher of the Year before her retirement in 1986. During their 57 years of marriage, Betty and Harold enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S and Canada, and they particularly enjoyed their New England trips. They also enjoyed antiquing, playing cards, watching sports, attending church, and spending time with family and friends. Betty was a loving mother, and is survived by her two daughters; Sherry Moxley of Maryland and Linda Fox and her husband, Eric, of Maine; 10 grandchildren; Troy Chaney, Jr., Brett Chaney, Derek Chaney, Sierra Benedict, Megan Benedict, Sarah Fisher, John Fisher, Jessica Fisher, Shawn Fisher and Brittany Fox-DeFini and one great grandchild; Crissy DeFini and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, mother, and father, Betty is predeceased by her brother, Robert Lachance and grandson, Justin Chaney. A Celebration of Life for both Betty and Harold and private burial will be arranged in Maine at the convenience of their family.
