Elizabeth "Betty" T. (Meehan) Sweeney, 89, of Fairhaven, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at Our Lady's Haven. She was the wife of the late John B. Sweeney. John and Betty had a tremendous love for one another and were married for 45 years, until the time of his death.

Born and raised in New Bedford, a daughter of the late John F. and Edna E. (Smith) Meehan, she lived most of her life in Fairhaven. She graduated from Fairhaven High School and attended St. Luke's Nursing School.

Mrs. Sweeney worked as a manufacturing technician and worked in machine assembly at Cornell Dubilier and Alberox. She also worked in administrative and retail positions in the greater New Bedford area. Elizabeth worked hard to provide for her family and to ensure that her four daughters had access to educational opportunities that she did not have. She was very proud of the fact that all of her daughters achieved advanced degrees.

Elizabeth had a lifelong love of learning and literature which she passed on to her children. She particularly loved reading in the medical field. She had a quick wit, an extensive vocabulary, and was the undefeated queen of scrabble and crossword puzzles in her household. She enjoyed and had an inherent talent in drawing, especially portrait drawing. As a young woman, she enjoyed dancing to the music of her era, including Irish dancing, as a member of the Order of Hibernians. She celebrated and was proud of her Irish heritage and passed this on to her family. She was known for her smiling Irish eyes. She was very close to her family and was adored by her four daughters. She loved sitting on the back deck of the beach house she shared with her daughter, Shawna, watching the boats glide by on a warm summer day.

Her family includes four daughters, Maureen Sweeney Foster and her husband Russell of Portsmouth, NH, Sheila Medeiros and her husband Tony of Fairhaven, Colleen Sweeney and her husband Kermit Carraway of Fair Oaks, CA and Shawna Sweeney of Fairhaven; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Christopher Foster of Portsmouth, NH; a sister, Edna Harrison and her husband Joe of Mattapoisett; a brother, John Meehan and his wife Lucille of Coventry, RI; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by five siblings, Rosemary, Molly, Jerry, Jimmy and Dickie.

Her Funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 9:30am from the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Fairlawn, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven with a Funeral Mass at 10:30am in St. Joseph's Church, 74 Spring St., Fairhaven. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours Monday 5-8pm. For online tributes please visit: www.waring-sullivan.com
