Elmer T. Caldwell, 79, of Morganton passed away, peacefully, Friday evening, March 7, 2014, surrounded by his family.
Elmer was born in Morganton, North Carolina on September 23, 1934 to the late Herbert and Emma Tate Caldwell. He was a graduate of Olive Hill School and attended Norfolk State University. Mr. Caldwell was a proud veteran. He dedicated more than thirty years of service to his country with the U.S. Navy and the Merchant Marines. He was fond of open waters and was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, and cooking on the grill. Mr. Caldwell will always be remembered for his eagerness to serve his community and his willingness to lend a helping hand to others in need.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Hercules, James Andrew, Clarence, Thomas Elijah, Odell Samuel, Carel, and Ralph Caldwell; and two sisters, Annie May and Aulion Caldwell.
Those left to share his memories include his wife of twenty nine years, Marie Caldwell of the home; a brother, Robert Garlin Caldwell of Richmond, Virginia; a sister in law, Annie Caldwell of Morganton; three sons, Kirk Caldwell and wife Myong of Atlanta, Georgia, Craig Caldwell and wife Renee of Dayton, Ohio, and Tyrone Caldwell of Raleigh, North Carolina; four daughters, Donna, Teresa, Katrina all of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Maylin of New Jersey; grandchildren, Shannon Caldwell, Kirk Caldwell, Jr. and wife Holly, Latoya and husband Sebastian, all of Atlanta, Bryce of Jacksonville, Florida, Brandon and Craig, Jr. of Dayton, Tonya and Shiva of New Jersey; great grandchildren, Destiny, Deshawn, Mikael, Sebastian Jr. and Christian, all of Atlanta, and Braylen of Dayton; a host of nieces and nephews including, Patricia Molden and Manley "Pewee" of Morganton, Shalonda Gladden and Timothy Williams of Maryland; and many cousins, other relatives, and close friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 p.m., Friday, March 14, 2014 at Shiloh AME Church, 1323 N. Powerhouse Rd., in Morganton, with the Reverend Willis Camp officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow at the Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Church.
