Eloise Gower Wiegold, 94, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2017 at the Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation Nursing Home in Winston-Salem.

Mrs. Wiegold was born in New Bern, NC and lived in Winston-Salem for more than seventy years. She was the widow of Carl Wiegold, who died in 1974.

A homemaker until her husband died, Mrs. Wiegold joined the Forsyth County Health Department in 1976, working full-time as a secretary in the maternal and child health program. After retiring in 1988, she missed her work and her colleagues so much that she returned to the health department and worked part-time in various programs there until 2007.

Her close friend and colleague Tamra Smithson observed: "In the span of one's career there's always someone who stands out in the crowd - the person who is warm, friendly, caring and thinks of others, the one who always has a smile and a hug. For the nursing division, that person has been Eloise Wiegold."

Mrs. Wiegold was predeceased by her sister, Emma Gower Connor, by her daughter, Cheryl Wiegold, and by her son, Frederic Wiegold.

She is survived by her nephew, John Connor of Kings Mountain, NC, her granddaughter, Gwendolyn Wiegold of Chicago, IL, and her daughter-in-law, Karen Pennar of New York, NY.

The family is grateful to the many friends who have checked in on Mrs. Wiegold in recent years and in particular to her caregiver and friend Theresa Rucker.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 4 at the chapel at Forsyth Memorial Park, 3771 Yadkinville Rd., Winston-Salem. Frank Vogler & Sons Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Eloise Wiegold may be sent to Studio 651, a not-for-profit special needs adult development program, at 651 North Highland Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
