Elsie Imogene Staats, 85, of Springfield, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at home.

She was born on August 20, 1932, in Sharpsburg, IL, the daughter of the late Everett Edward and Elsie Maie (Redfern) Solomon. She married John K. Staats, Jr. on Dec. 24, 1953 and he preceded her in death on Oct. 14, 2012.

Elsie was a teacher for Springfield District 186. After she retired from teaching, she and her husband took up cycling. They biked across Iowa and Michigan and would also bike from Springfield to Carlinville to visit their daughter and grandchildren. She was also an accomplished runner who took up the sport at age 56, completed over 15 marathons and routinely was one of the top finishers in her age group. She was a member of the Springfield Roadrunners' Club, and was a very active member of Elliott Avenue Baptist Church in Springfield. Elsie was a devoted grandmother who doted on her 21 grandchildren never missing an opportunity to spoil them.

She is survived by 5 children, Keith (wife Alice) Staats, Kathie Staats-Bryant, Kevin (wife Karen) Staats, Kirk (wife Rebekah Stanley) Staats, and Kelly (wife Marilyn Hibalo) Staats; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, her sister Jessie Blakey; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a son Kerry Staats; and 6 siblings, Darlene Beamer, Lloyd Solomon, Lois Ball, Wayne Solomon, Eugene Solomon, and Frances Shryock.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West, Springfield. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018 at 1:30 pm at Elliott Avenue Baptist Church, with Rev. David Nicholson officiating. Friends may visit on Sunday from 1 pm until time of the memorial service at the church. Per her wishes, cremation rites were accorded.
