Emory Leap Thomas, age 99, formerly of 370 Sunrise Avenue, Harrisonburg, VA, passed away at VMRC Sunday, January 29, 2017 where he had resided since July 2011.

Emory was born February 16, 1917 in Montezuma, west of Dayton. He was the son of the late Homer F. and Annie Leap Thomas. He graduated from Dayton High School. He was a veteran of WWII and spent one year in Japan. Emory believed in hard work starting with picking strawberries at a young age. He also worked at Virginia Craftsman with his father, was a mechanic for Rockingham Motors and Republic Oil as well as a driver for Lloyd Myers.

He was a life insurance agent for 45 years starting with Union Life and retiring from American General Life Insurance Company. He then worked for the Harrisonburg Auto Auction for 18 years.

On June 10, 1939 he married Mary Marguerite Gilkeson who preceded him in death November 11, 1997. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Norman and H. Frank, Jr. as well as sisters, Evangeline, Elizabeth, and Dorothy.

He is survived by two children, a daughter Patricia Ann Wichael (James) and grandson Brandon (Sarah) and great grandson Luke, a son James (Karen) and grandson Alex (Allyson) and a great grandson due in March. He is also survived by a sister, Elsie T. Hyde as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was a lifelong member of Dayton United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir, was superintendent and a trustee. He was also a master Mason with the Rockingham Union Lodge #27 in Harrisonburg.

A Memorial service will be held 2:00 pm, Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Dayton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Bird and Rev. Bruce Carper officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service. Graveside services will be private.
Friends may sign the register book at the funeral home at any time. The casket will be closed.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at Yoder House for the excellent care of their father over the past five and one-half years.
