Esther Armillda Mims Covington, 83, of 222 S. Shirley Avenue, Sanford, Florida, passed from this life on Friday, January 12, 2018 in her home after a long illness. Born in Pisgah, Alabama on April 21, 1934, she lived in Pisgah and then in Chattanooga, Tennessee before becoming a Sanford resident.
Following her graduation from high school in Chattanooga, she and her family moved to Sanford. She worked in the Wilson-Maier Furniture store before meeting and eventually marrying her husband, James Harvey Covington. Although she worked in banking for several years, she was a homemaker for most of her married life. She and Harvey were married for 62 years.

An example of Christian womanhood, Armillda lived to serve others. She had an exceptional mothering instinct, loving and caring for her own children and the children of others. Her favorite activity was rocking a baby. She was a member of the Sanford church of Christ and gave many years of work by teaching children's and ladies' classes, sewing and quilting, cleaning, cooking, visiting, and taking young women under her wing when they needed support. She knew the Bible, devoting herself to the study of scriptures and sharing her spirituality with others. Her beautiful soprano voice always added to the sounds of praise during each worship service. Wherever she worshipped, lived, or visited, her influence and example will be missed.

Armillda Covington is survived by 6 children: Laura Lynn Cullum (John), Catherine Ann Lindwall (Hank), James Harvey Covington, Jr. (Denise), Robert Scott Covington (Valerie), Dana Louise Covington, and Caryn Elaine Dominessy (David). Surviving sisters are Ann Newton and Elaine Galloway. She also cherished her 18 grandchildren: Lisa Canavan, Christine Watts, John Cullum III, Courtney Lindwall, Rachel Lindwall, Michael Covington, David Covington, Nathan Covington, Spencer Covington, Timothy Covington, Caitlin Covington, William Covington, Wyatt Covington, Elizabeth Covington, Kyle Evans, Payton Evans, Shannon Dominessy, and Christopher Dominessy. Missing her are 9 great-grandchildren: Reilly Canavan, Rowan Canavan, Reece Canavan, Rex Canavan, Evan Watts, Ava Watts, Ella Watts, Anna Watts, and Ewan Cullum. Many nieces and nephews mourn her loss as well. Two of the babies she cared for, now adults, were her "grandsons" also: Preston Scott and Clayton Scott. Predeceasing her were husband James Harvey Covington, father Albert Mims, mother Clara, stepmother Laura, grandparents (who served as parents) Oscar and Bessie Mims, half sister Judy Morris, and stepbrother Louis Payne.

The family thanks the nurses and aides from Vitas Hospice for the months of kind, gentle care performed on Armillda's behalf.

A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the Sanford church of Christ, 1500 Park Avenue, Sanford, Florida. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am, and the service will follow at 11:00 am. Dr. Walter Person will officiate. No graveside service will take place.
