Esther Cecilia Bauer Spring, formerly of Lufkin, age 96, died peacefully, on May 24, 2017. Reared on a farm in New Munich, Minnesota, Esther was born February 4, 1921, one of ten children born to Mathias Joseph Bauer and Apolonia Schmitz Bauer. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, and her husband of 63 years, Gilbert M. Spring.
Esther graduated from Melrose High School in Minnesota and the University of Minnesota Nursing School. After graduating from nursing school in 1942, she enlisted in the Women's Army Corps. She was stationed at a field hospital in the South Pacific during World War ll.
After the war ended, she met her future husband, Gilbert M. Spring, while stationed at Fort Kit Carson Colorado Springs, Colorado. They were married on July 26, 1949, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1953, Esther received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing education from the University of Texas.
She is survived by six children: Nadine Nickeson and husband Rob Safety Harbor, Florida; Charnita Justiss and husband Ken of Midlothian, Texas; Esther Turner and husband Kent of Fairview, Texas; Glenora Patterson and husband Edward of Amarillo, Texas; Gretchen Hoffman and husband Marty of Grand Prairie, Texas; and Gilbert Spring Jr. of Austin, Texas; ten grandchildren: Matthew Nickeson and wife Melissa of Seattle, Washington; Stephen Nickeson of Orlando, Florida; Gavin Justiss and wife Pam of Dallas, Texas; Kurt Turner of Sequim, Washington; Keri Laney and husband Ryan of Allen, Texas; Bryan Patterson and wife Michaela of Brooklyn, New York; Alicia Patterson-Saenz and husband Nick of Charleston, South Carolina; Monica Patterson of Amarillo, Texas, Chelsea Hoffman of Grand Prairie, Texas; and Kiersten Hoffman of Grand Prairie, Texas; four great-grandchildren: Jaina Justiss, Emma Laney, Aaron Laney, and Caleb Saenz; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Bean Massey Burge Funeral home Friday May 26, 2017 from 6-8 pm a funeral mass at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Sat. May 27, 2017 at 10:00 am in Grand Prairie, she will be laid to rest at the DFW National Cemetery.
