Ethel M. Nilsen, 90, of Swanzey, NH and formerly of Goshen, NH, passed away on Monday, December 25, 2017 at the Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth Hitchcock, Keene, following a brief illness.

Ethel was born on September 9, 1927 to Christian and Othilda (Halvorsen) Thompson of Bronx, New York. Ethel and her brothers, Henry and Roy, grew up in the Bronx and later on City Island. After high school, Ethel's first job was as a secretary for the Borden's Company in in New York City.

On June 24, 1950 Ethel and Arne were married and soon began their family. After moving to Deer Park, NY they became very active in the Deer Park Community Presbyterian Church. Along with their three daughters, Ethel and Arne opened their home as foster parents to several children who needed their care. Ethel continued her community service by becoming a Girl Scout Leader.

Ethel's life was centered on helping others. Once her children were older Ethel studied to become a licensed practical nurse and worked for over 20 years at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, NY.

Following their retirement, Ethel and Arne moved to Goshen, NH in 1990. While residing in Goshen, Ethel worked as a paraprofessional for the Lempster Community School, was active in the Goshen Community Church and was also a librarian at the Goshen Public Library.

Throughout her adult life, Ethel was always an active volunteer wanting to help others any way that she possibly could. As a member of AARP, Ethel volunteered for the organization; she was the recipient of the Andrus Award for Volunteering in 2004.

Ethel and Arne moved to Keene in 2010 where they resided for five years. Ethel continued her community service by reading to the young children at the local elementary school. Ethel moved to Swanzey in 2016 where she resided with her daughter Linda and her husband, Doug.

As a member of the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, in Swanzey Ethel was active in helping with various church activities and functions. Ethel enjoyed knitting and reading, and took great pride in tending to her flower gardens. She also enjoyed swimming, especially in the ocean.

She will be greatly missed by many, especially her three daughters, Karen Kulick and her husband, Tom, of Goffstown, NH, Linda Smith and her husband, Doug, of Swanzey, NH, Christine Nilsen and her partner, Michael Bohenick, of Elsmere, DE; five grandchildren, Jacqueline Kaufman, Trisha Kulick, Kimberly Luongo, Andrew Smith, Daniel Smith; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Ethel was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Arne R. Nilsen, in October of 2015; and her two brothers.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 2:00PM in the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 695 Old Homestead Highway, Swanzey, NH. Burial in the Goshen Village Cemetery will be private.
