Ethel Marie Butchek, 68, of Springfield, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at Memorial Medical Center.

She was born on Jan. 28, 1949, in Springfield, the daughter of D. Ray Smith and the late Betty June (Songster) Smith. She married Robert Michael Butchek and he preceded her in death in 2005.

Ethel retired as the Executive Director of the Springfield YWCA in 2002. Prior to that, she served as the Executive Director for Contact Ministries. She had served as President and board member of the Altrusa Club of Springfield, the IL Coalition to End Homelessness, served as Past-President and board member of the Springfield Federation for Welfare Reform, as Chairman of Springfield Providers Council, a member of the Greater Springfield Interfaith Association. She had also served as Chairman of the Sangamon County Community Services Block Grant Advisory Council, served on the Illinois Department of Public Aid Welfare Services Committee, the Springfield Redevelopment Corporation, St. John's Hospital, Community Nealth Status C oordinating Team, Memorial Medical Center, Community Advisory Council, the Junior League of Springfield, Citizens Advisory Council, Sangamon Area Literacy Council, Senior Citizens of Sangamon County Board of Directors, Illinois Hunger Coalition Board of Directors, served as Vice Chairman of the Springfield Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, Habitat for Humanity, Family Service Committee, Federal Home Loan Bank of S Chicago, Community Development Advisory Council Member, Committee member and Chairman of the Community Resource Providers, and with the Family Service Center's Young Parent Support Services as Past President. She was inducted in the Lanphier Hall of Fame in 1996 and was a member of Historic Grace Lutheran Church in Springfield.

She is survived by her son Terry Butcher of Springfield; 2 stepsons, Dennis and Mark Butchek, both of Springfield; her father Ray Smith of Springfield; several grandchildren; her sister Jeanie Nizzaro of Texas; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Services are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 E. Allen, Springfield, where visitation will be held on Monday, July 17, 2017 from 4 to 7 pm. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at 11 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield. There will be a gathering for family and friends following the burial.
