Our well-loved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather went to be with the Lord on October 31, 2017, at the age of 92. He will be greatly missed. Gene was raised in Henderson, NC on a tobacco farm: one his favorite sayings was "he had done everything to tobacco but smoke it." He was one of seven children of Charlie Burroughs and Mary Wiggins Baskett.

He graduated from Henderson High School, served honorably in the US Navy and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill. He worked over 30 years with the NC Department of Transportation and retired as Assistant Controller.

Fortunately, he had many years of retirement to enjoy his family, his church, the Optimist Club and all sports. He loved his family and UNC with a passion. He attended UNC football games as long as his health permitted; after which, the weekend revolved around UNC's schedule.

Gene was married to Annie ("BB") Britton Bartholomew for 42 years, "BB" died in 1990. They had three children: Susan (Roddy) Seymour of Greenville; Michael (Candy) Baskett of Raleigh; David (Misti) Baskett of Fayetteville.

Gene had a beautiful bass voice and sang in his church choirs and a community chorus where he met his second wife, Gwen. They were married 24 years, from which he inherited two step-sons: Douglas (Claire) Guthrie of Santa Clarita, CA, and Jeffrey (Nancy) Guthrie of Raleigh.

The grandchildren and great grandchildren include: Scott (Erin) Seymour and children Britton and Cullen and Amy (Jamie) Dudley and children Caleb and Berkley of Greenville; Taylor Baskett and daughter Ava of Fayetteville; Jordan Baskett of Nashville, TN; and Victoria Baskett of Goldsboro. Step grandchildren are Ashley (Chris) Drexel; Aaron Barreto; Rachael, Joshua and Michael Guthrie; Levi Guthrie.

His surviving siblings are William (Ruth) Bartholomew of Oxford and Betty Jean (Ed) Hicks of Advance and many nieces and nephews that he cherished. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Lucille Buchanan, Jo Ashcraft, Anne Bailey, and Charlie Baskett.

Graveside Funeral Rites, with Military Honors, will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 3, 2017 at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens in Raleigh. A Celebration of Gene's Life will be held at 11 am Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Benson Memorial United Methodist Church. Family will receive friends in the fellowship hall after the church service.

Memorials may be made to Benson Memorial United Methodist Church, 4706 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, NC 27612.
