Eugene Morgan Jr., 96, died on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017, in his home with his family by his side.

Eugene Morgan Jr. was born in Vinton, La., March 19, 1921. He attended school in Vinton and graduated in 1940. He ran track at Vinton High School for three years. He won state in 1940, and ran the the 440 yard dash in 50 seconds. This was the record at that time and held the state record for about nine years. He also received scholarships to Louisiana State University and University of South Louisiana in track.

Eugene also served in the Army and was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II in the 532nd Engineers Boat and Shore Regiment. After receiving an honorable discharge he then moved to Houston, Texas. He worked for Shell Oil for 34 years as a pipefitter, retiring in 1982 and moving back to his hometown of Vinton, La., with his wife, Ann.

Eugene enjoyed spending time, watching and listening to baseball and football games, and also going to the horse races.

Eugene married Ann Castleman in 1949. They were married for 59 and a half years. They had three children; daughter, Vickie Barker married to Bob Barker; daughter, Shirley Simon married to Mark Simon; and son, Gary Morgan. Eugene has eight grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Irene Duplant; his wife, Anna Lou Castleman Morgan; and son, Gary Morgan.

Funeral service for Eugene Morgan Jr. will be in Hixson Funeral Home in Vinton. Visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 10, at 5-7 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 11, at 9 a.m. until time of service. The service for Eugene Morgan Jr. will be held Monday at Hixson Funeral Home in Vinton at 10 a.m., officiating the service will be Pastor Shane McCoy. Burial will be in Nibletts Bluff Cemetery.
