Eva L. Hughes, 85 of Windsor departed this life peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, January 5, 2009. Eva was born on November 14, 1923 in Americus, Georgia to the late Charles W. Barlow and Fannie L. Scott. A graduate of Hartford Hospital School of Nursing, Eva was an Operating Room and Recovery Room Nurse for more than 30 years, retiring from UCONN Health Center in 1985. A resident of the Greater Hartford area, Eva resided in the Town of Windsor for more than 30 years. Over the years Eva sought to improve the quality of life for others through numerous civic, political and community organizations such as being a life member of the NAACP, the NCNW, the Urban League and a former member of the Town of Windsor Black Democratic Club. She was a woman with diverse interests who loved to read, travel, sew and provide advice about life in general. Eva was a devout member of Metropolitan AME Zion Church for more than 40 years, serving as a Trustee, Class Leader, Usher, Missionary Society, Church School and other ministries of the church. She leaves to celebrate her life a loving and devoted daughter, Jo-Ann Bellamy, whom she made her home with, her daughter Rev. Michele Augustine (Rev. Michael) of Hartford; a son Lemuel Bellamy of New Britain and a god son William Schley Jr. of Bloomfield. She also leaves four beloved grandchildren, Jason Bellamy of New Britain, Carla Waller (Avery) of Bloomfield, Stacey Waller (Mynor-Dean) of Hartford, and Ashley Bellamy of Windsor; her eight treasured great-grandchildren AQuanna & Avery Hansley of Bloomfield, Jason & Jahmi Bellamy of East Hartford, Jaishon & Jaida Bellamy of New Britain and Amaria & Yafari Boland of Hartford. She leaves four sisters, Charlotte Jones, Janice Richards, Teresa Barlow & Aurice Barlow all of Hartford; four brothers Charles, Ernest & George Barlow all of Hartford; Richard Barlow (Denise) of Bloomfield. She also leaves dearest and long time friends (Jolly Ten) Marguerite Schley, Mary Ballard, Aureila Evans and Mattie Reynolds; her sisters-in-Christ, Carrie Roulhac, Elector Rose, Anna Stephenson and Lucille Bartee. Equally important, Eva leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins & many friends. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Karen Jones and Mattie Edmonds, and three brothers, Clarence, Paul and Donald Barlow. The family would like to thank Dr. Andrew Salner of the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center, Dr. Samuel Pope of CT Multi Specialty Group and the staff of VITAS Hospice of East Hartford for their care, support and concern. A celebration of Eva’s life will be held on Friday, January 9th at 11:00 am at the Metropolitan AME Zion Church, 2051 Main Street, Hartford with the Rev. Terry L. Jones, Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 – 11 am and the celebration service will begin at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Palisado Cemetery, on Palisado Ave., in Windsor.
