Someone once said, "To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die". Evelyn Gloria Spalding is still with us, in our hearts. She passed quietly Saturday, January 20th, 2018, at ninety-six years of age. Evelyn was born October 8th, 1921 in Houston, Texas. After attending Steven F Austin high school in East Houston, later working at the Post Exchange at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, she met Nicholas R. Spalding whom she married in Houston, Texas. A member of Saint Christopher's Catholic Church, she was active in girl scouts and in the mother's club. As a young person she like to bowl and to fish, although she admitted to getting seasick on the pier. The extended families owned beach houses on the Bolivar coast, where summers were long and lots of fun. After Nick retired they bought a travel trailer and explored the US, Canada, and Mexico. She enjoyed all her nieces and nephews but especially Ethel's children, who looked upon her as a substitute grandmother as they grew up. She loved small dogs and had a series of poodles and finally her sweet Pekingese.

She is preceded in death by her father, Edward Bottera (August 12th,1889 -May, 1963) and her mother, Agnes Kathryn Browne (July 1892-December 1957.) Evelyn was married to Nicholas R. Spalding (1918-1984). She also had three brothers and two sisters who await her in heaven. She is preceded in death by her brother Edward Bottera, his wife Elizabeth Moreland Bottera; Evelyn's oldest sister Agnes Edna Bottera and her husband, Richmond Hobson Ward, James Lynn Bottera and his wife Laverne, her brother Marvin Luis Bottera and his wife Irma and her youngest sister Ethel Jacqueline Moore.

Evelyn raised two children, Holly Spalding Van Dyke (husband William G. Van Dyke) and Douglas Glen Spalding (wife Bonnie Spalding.) She had four grandchildren, William Lance Van Dyke, (wife Valorie) Chad Eric Van Dyke, Kirk Nicholas Van Dyke (wife Misty) and Anna Marie Lewis, husband (Addam M. Lewis.) Her great grandchildren include Brittany and Angela Van Dyke, Caleb Eric Van Dyke, Savannah Nicole Van Dyke, Samantha Noel Van Dyke, Aubrey M. Lewis and Alexander M. Lewis. In addition, she had two great grandchildren through marriage, Jessica and Christopher Thompson. She was fortunate to live long enough to know about her great, great grandchildren, Daniella and Fredrick Thompson. She had many close friends and cousins. She was especially fond of her friend, Anna May Guarnieri who was her wedding maid of honor and Anna May's four children, including her goddaughter, Rosalie Blanchard.
