Filippo Zarrelli



Filippo Zarrelli, age 88, died on August 24, 2015, surrounded by his family in the home of his daughter, Frances Simons, in Ashton, Maryland. Eldest child of Francesco and Benedetta Martino Zarrelli, he was born on February 26, 1927, in Monacilioni, Italy. Filippo was University educated at Liceo Classico Mario Pagano. He married Tina Cocozzella, the mother of his children in 1953 and emigrated to the United States in 1954. A talented chef, he worked at the Mayflower Hotel for 15 years, creating pastry delicacies and carving ice sculptures for Embassy and Presidential parties as well as for the frequent diners at the famous Washington, D.C. hotel. He continued working as a chef and baker until his retirement in 1992.





Filippo was widowed in 1968 and his daughters remained his greatest joy. He is survived by all five daughters and their spouses, Lillian (Stephen Ryals), Frances (Neil Simons), Maria (David Buczek), Andrea (David Lopes), and Rita (Charles Smith), and his thirteen grandchildren, Nicholas Ryals, Zachary Simons, Tyler Buczek, David Simons, Caitlin Ryals, Alexandra Lopes, Daniel Buczek, Emma Smith, Andrew Lopes, Natalie Buczek, Joseph Smith, Amelia Lopes, and Dominic Smith.





Filippo is also survived by a sister and three brothers, Maria Pizzuto, Antonio Zarrelli, Salvatore Zarrelli, Lino Zarrelli, and their spouses and children.





The family will receive relatives and friends from 5-8 pm on Friday, August 28 at the Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home at 11800 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD and between 10-11 am at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 2900 Olney-Sandy Spring Rd, Olney, MD on Saturday, August 29. Funeral Mass will follow at 11 am.
