Loving Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother

Florence "Eleanor" Hoelzer, February 7, 1934 - March 3, 2021

Eleanor, loving daughter of the late George and Myrtle Mitchell. Dear sister to Charlotte (Les) Booze and Jimmy (Mary Jane) Mitchell. Beloved mother of Diane, David (Amy), and Steven (Judy). Treasured grandmother to Rachel Roudaut (Corinten), Daniel, Jayne Stang (Dallas) and Mark, great grandmother to Callahan. Aunt and friend to many.

Eleanor graduated from the University of Maryland and married Ronald Hoelzer shortly after. She was a devoted Air Force wife. She made a beautiful home out of many houses and created a loving base for her children. She lived many places in the United States, Southeast Asia, and Europe but her childhood home on Snake Lane and her residences in Florida were the ones she held most dear.

Eleanor was an expert seamstress and created her own clothes, curtains, Christmas tree skirts, Halloween costumes, wedding dresses, anything and everything sewn with love and to perfection. She was also a seasoned gardener who adored cultivating roses and planting trees, bushes, and other flowers to make beautiful outdoor spaces. Wherever she lived, she created beauty in her surroundings. Her family called this her "Midas Touch".

After raising her children, Eleanor found her new joy working at URS Greiner (a large engineering firm). She started in their library and her role expanded to marketing and Human Resources. Eleanor's confidence and talents blossomed. She met many dear friends and enjoyed her job fully.

Once she retired, Eleanor returned to her roots in Maryland and lived near Ocean City. Many family memories were created with crab feasts, beach days and Bonanza family game nights! Eleanor spent a few years in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her daughter Diane. During this adventure she created a beautiful backyard oasis and made new friends. Her last years were spent at Sun City Center in Florida. By her mid 80s, Eleanor's declining health brought her to Rocky River, Ohio. She lived at Rockport Senior Living where she was tenderly cared for by their staff and her family. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren watching college football; especially her Florida Gators, playing board games, and cards, and conversing about sports and past and current events.

Eleanor never lost her adventurous spirit. Her travels continued after her Air Force chapter closed. She went to China, cruised Europe and the Caribbean. Her love for her children and grandchildren brought her to their homes where many simple and happy moments were created into lasting memories. She went white water rafting, camping and hiking, and even parasailed over Ocean City when she was in her late 70s! Recently, she enjoyed looking at her photos and remembering and reminiscing all of her life's adventures with her friends, caretakers and her beloved family.

Our dear mother, grandmother and friend will be missed immensely and loved for eternity.

A celebration of Eleanor's life will be held in December at her favorite beach in Clearwater, Florida. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 600 River Avenue Suite 400, Pittsburgh, PA 15212.

Eleanor kept the following poem in a frame and hung it in each home she lived:

After a while you learn
That love doesn't mean leaning
That kisses aren't contracts,
and presents aren't promises.

And you begin to accept defeats
With the grace of a woman,
Not the grief of a child.

So you plant your own garden
And decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone
To bring you flowers.

And you learn that you can endure…
that you really are strong
and you really do have worth
and that with every tomorrow
comes the dawn.
