Floyd James Whalen Sr. (Sonny), 88, of Abilene, Texas, passed away on Friday, December 15, at Hendrick Hospice Care. Funeral services will be held at 9:30am on Monday, December 18, 2017 at South Side Baptist Church, 1425 S. 7th, with Blake White officiating. Burial will follow at Texas State Veteran Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation on Sunday evening at 6:00pm at Elliott Hamil Funeral Home on Hickory Street in Abilene.
Floyd was born on April 27, 1929 in Haskell County, Texas to Gus and Ida Mae (Myers) Whalen. Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother, Walter, and two sisters, Frieda and Edna.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Whalen; sons, Andy, Michael and wife Robin, Jamie and wife Jane, Ronnie, daughters; Linda and husband Dave, Karen and husband David, and Deanna and husband Derek. 11 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren with baby bear Glover on the way.
Floyd served in the Army during the Korean War, receiving a purple heart. After serving in the army, he worked as a Barber, retiring from the Abilene State School in the early 90's. Floyd drove the church bus for Highland Park Baptist church for many years. He was a dedicated Christian man who had a great influence on not only his children, but also his many friends and acquaintances.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to Hendrick Hospice Care. The family would also like to thank Hendrick Health System and Hendrick Hospice Care for taking such good care of our husband and dad during his last days.
