Forrest Harland Stairs, Jr.,91, of Beaverdam, passed away on Wednesday, January 24, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest Harland and Rosalie Nuckols Stairs Sr.; brother, William D. Stairs; and sisters, Shirley M. Stairs and Margaret S. Hicks. Mr. Stairs was born and raised in Richmond, Va., where he attended Richmond City Public Schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II and the Korean War. During the Korean War, Mr. Stairs served on the 5th Regimental Combat Team and rose to the rank of Captain, leading his troops in combat. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor. After the war, Mr. Stairs served in the Army Reserves. Following his discharge, he attended University of Virginia, where he completed his studies to receive a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. Mr. Stairs worked for the Commonwealth of Virginia as a bridge design engineer for over 25 years. He was a founding member and deacon of Southampton Baptist Church in Richmond, Va. After moving to Hanover County, Mr. Stairs became active with First Baptist Church of Ashland, where he taught Sunday school for over 17 years. As an avid woodworker, he always had a project or home improvement in the works. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 64 years, Frances Harvey Stairs of Roseland, Va.; children, Stephen Harland Stairs of Beaverdam, Va., Paul Whitney Stairs of Richmond, Va. and Jenny Stairs Parrish (Douglas) of Charlotte Courthouse, Va.; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Virginia A. Harvey of Roseland, Va. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 26, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home - Reid Chapel, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, Va. 23005. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 27, 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Ashland, 800 Thompson St., Ashland, Va. 23005. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. in Jonesboro Baptist Church Cemetery, 9215 Patrick Henry Hwy., Roseland, Va. 22967.
