Bozrah - Francis (Mitch) D. Mitchell, 85, of Fitchville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, in the company of family and friends at home. Born September 5, 1931 to Sadie and Paul Mitchell in New Bedford, he served with the Connecticut Army National Guard for 3 years and nine months and in Korea six+ months as a heavy artillery mechanic, earning the Korean Service Medal with a bronze service star, and the United Nations Service Medal, being discharged with the rank of corporal. After being honorably discharged from the National Guard, Mitch immediately signed up for a longer hitch, marrying the love of his life, Margaret (Peggy) Michna on September 27, 1952. Mitch attended grade school at St. Patrick Cathedral School, and high school at the Norwich Free Academy, graduating in 1950. He earned an Associate's Degree at Thames Valley Technical College and later attended the University of New Haven, earning a baccalaureate degree in Mechanical Engineering, while working at Pratt & Whitney. He worked at Pratt for 37 years, starting as a disassembler in East Hartford, and later worked on fuel cell development for the space program at the South Windsor facility, then as a test engineer for twelve years in West Palm Beach, FL at the Military Engines division. Mitch was an expert woodworker creating dozens of artful pieces of furniture for members of the family. He was a skilled private pilot and flew with Peggy to the Grand Canyon for their 25th wedding anniversary. They enjoyed travelling, visiting Washington DC, as well as Florida, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Niagara Falls, Hawaii, and cruised in the Cayman Islands. Mitch is survived by his wife Peggy, sister Loretta and brother-in-law Donald Michna of Preston, son Gary of Ocala, FL, daughter Kathleen and her husband Richard Larson of Belchertown, MA, grandson Aaron and his wife Sarah Mitchell, and their children Eva and Julian, of Fitchville. He is predeceased by his sister Pauline and her husband Francis Pounch of Preston, and daughter-in-law Kimberly of Ocala, FL. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Bozrah Volunteer Fire Dept. 239 Fitchville Rd, Bozrah, CT 06334. A visitation will be held at the Labenski Funeral Home Sunday, April 23rd from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, with a funeral mass held Monday, April 24th at St. John Church 190 Fitchville Rd, Bozrah, CT, at 10:00 AM.
