Frank Dare Slingland, 89, of Lusby, MD and most recently, Raleigh, NC, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at Hillcrest Rehabilitation Center. Born in Washington, DC to John and Elsie Virginia (nee Dare), he lived most of his life in Washington.

Frank is lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Betty. He was a loving and proud father of his three children, Ginger Merkle (Rick) of Raleigh, Chuck Slingland (Kathy), of Lusby, MD, and Susan Slingland (Wayne Middlesteadt), Boone, NC. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Jennifer Filosa (Gerard), Scott Slingland (Ashley Ledford) and Patrick Merkle, and one great-grandchild.

Frank was director of MEET THE PRESS and the two-time Emmy-winning NBC HUNTLEY-BRINKLEY REPORT. In a recognition letter, Rod Serling (Writer/Producer and President of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) wrote, "Please keep up the good work. Our medium needs you and more like you." Later he directed the NBC NIGHTLY NEWS. He was recognized for his contribution in directing Emmy-winning special event TV programs APOLLO: A JOURNEY TO THE MOON and SOLAR ECLIPSE: A DARKNESS AT NOON - March 7,1970. He "moonlighted" directing ACC Basketball and Notre Dame Football when it was produced by C.D. Chesley. Frank's expertise in directing was sought for unique opportunities to do presidential debates, Olympics, and national conventions.

He earned his retirement where he enjoyed gardening and fishing. He persevered at golf, and was known for his ever-present sense of humor, music appreciation and snazzy dress.

A Celebration of Life Mass will be held on November 4th at 12N in St. Mary of the Angels Chapel at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 11401 Leesville Road, Raleigh.
