Freddie Anthony Wilcox, 79 years old, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, May 2, 2014. He was born on September 23, 1934 in Harahan, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Leona Prados Wilcox. He was a brother to Leota Wilcox Salmeron and Edwin Wilcox. Freddie is survived by his former spouse, Wilma Wilcox of Harahan and 3 sons and 3 daughters, Therese Wilcox, Freddie (Bud) Wilcox, Jr., Tommy Wilcox(Mary Riley Wilcox), Monica Wilcox Fabacher( Donald Fabacher, Sr.), the late Teddy Wilcox, Rose Wilcox Gobuzzi (AJ Gobuzzi), his 10 grandchildren, Holly Hoffman, Gary Hoffman, Jr., Heidi Hoffman, Matthew Hoffman, Kristie Wilcox, Kacie Wilcox, Donald Fabacher, Jr., Chad Fabacher, Jarrod Fabacher, Mark Wilcox, Christopher Boe and also survived by 12 great-grandchildren.
Freddie Wilcox was a local football hero who served as Harahan's Mayor for 14 years. Born in Harahan when its north woods were known for hunting, Freddie Wilcox became a star football player at Kenner High School, played baseball and football at Tulane and drafted by the San Francisco 49ers for his football achievements. In 1966 Mr. Wilcox was elected Mayor at the age of 31. He served 14 years, stressing improvements to what he loved most- the city's recreational department. In 1980, he left the Mayor's Office when his former high school coach, Joe Yenni, who was Parish President, tapped him to become head of the Parish's recreational department. Mr. Wilcox later became director of the Parish Animal Shelters before retiring.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at the Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive, Metairie, La. The visitation will begin at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery.
