Fulton L. SAIER MD 74
July 30, 1943, Palo Alto, California ~
August 9, 2017, Portland, Oregon

Fulton L. Saier was born in Palo Alto, CA to parents Milton and Lucelia (Bates) Saier on July 30, 1943. Fulton was the youngest of three children and brother to Lucretia and Milton. He grew up in Palo Alto. He fondly recalled weekends and holidays with his family at the beach in Santa Cruz, CA where he enjoyed surfing. Fulton played the flute in the California Youth Symphony and he enjoyed catching butterflies for his personal collection. Beginning at a young age, Fulton became interested in black and white photography and developed his own images in his home darkroom. Fulton graduated from Palo Alto High School in 1961.

Following high school, Fulton went on to college at Stanford University to study science and medicine and he earned his bachelor's degree in 1966. In addition to his interest in medicine, Fulton had a deep passion for architecture. In the middle of his time at Stanford, Fulton took a temporary detour on his medical path and he went to school at U.C. Berkeley to study Architecture. For a time, he debated switching from medicine to architecture. Ultimately, his life's path returned to the medical field, but Fulton never lost his love for architecture and he went on to design several houses.

In 1966, Fulton relocated to St. Louis, MO to continue his medical education. He attended St. Louis University School of Medicine where he ultimately earned his medical degree in 1970.

In September of 1967, during his time in St. Louis, Fulton met Kathy Martini at a fraternity gathering. He asked her to dance and Kathy thought he was a great dancer. The two exchanged wedding vows on June 6, 1970 in St. Louis at St. Elizabeth Academy Chapel. It was the first and statistically last time anyone had a nuptial mass in that sanctuary. Their wedding day was a busy one - in consideration of family time and travel, Fulton's medical school graduation proceedings took place that morning and they were wed later that afternoon.

In 1969, Fulton entered into the US Air Force Reserves and he transitioned into active duty from 1974 -'76. Fulton ascended to the rank of Major, managed the health care of the wives of his fellow servicemen and facilitated the delivery of many of their children.
The two were blessed with two sons: Todd was born in 1972 and son Kevin was born in 1974.

In June of 1976, Fulton and Kathy moved to Portland, OR to begin a new chapter in their lives. In September of 1976 Fulton went to work for the Portland Clinic as an OB/GYN. He delivered babies and performed surgeries at Providence St Vincent Hospital. For many years, Fulton served as the sole OB/GYN at the Portland Clinic. He retired on November 1, 1999. Fulton was a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Fulton and Kathy were members of St. Pius X Catholic Church and the two were heads of the preschool religion program when their boys were young. Fulton served as a Webelos Cub Scouts den leader.

For fun and recreation, Fulton and family visited their cabin at Mt. Hood, OR. They enjoyed hiking, swimming, fishing, riding bikes, and skiing - cross country and downhill. Fulton continued his pursuit of photography and he loved taking pictures on hikes and developing them in his darkrooms both at the mountain cabin and his home in Portland. Fulton was also an avid stamp collector. In the summers, the family made trips to Santa Cruz, CA to visit family and Fulton's familiar childhood recreation spots. The last 18 years of his life were spent traveling with family to see and enjoy the people and places he loved so much.
It has been said that Fulton "packed a lot into his 74 years". He will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, determination, hard work, and his dry sense of humor. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend and he will be missed.

Fulton is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Kathy; sons Todd (Heather) of San Diego, CA and Kevin (Patricia) of Tigard, OR; sister, Lucretia Johnson (Dale) of Wallowa, OR; brother Milton (Jeanne) Saier of San Diego, CA; and five grandchildren, Nathan, Luke, Allison, Joshua, and Zackary Saier.

A celebration of Fulton's life will be held at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 10445 SW Canterbury Ln, Tigard, OR, on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at 4pm.

Fulton was laid to rest at Skyline memorial Gardens, 4101 NW Skyline Blvd., Portland, OR in the garden of the Nativity.
