Garth Richard Ashpaugh

1928 - 2017

Garth Ashpaugh, 89, passed suddenly Thursday October 12, 2017 at age 89 while in Florida preparing to continue his rehabilitation from a broken hip. Visitation will be from 1-2pm, Friday, October 20, 2017 at Memorial Funeral Home 1217 Business loop 70 West Columbia, MO, with funeral service at 2pm. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Garth was a long-time resident of Columbia and retired as a pipefitter from the Veterans Administration Hospital 27 years ago. He and Jeanette relocated to the Truman Lake area where he worked diligently to remove as many crappie as he legally could (And he was pretty good at it!) He was fishing up until some recent medical issues prevented it. He volunteered in Lincoln, MO to help build a youth center and was generally always around when help was needed. He and Jeanette were active members of the Lincoln Methodist Church up until they relocated to a retirement community outside of Sedalia about 10 years ago, yet they continued to maintain the relationships with those folks. He still got his hair cut in Lincoln!

He was a good father and grandfather, taught us all to fish. Enjoyed cooking fish also and having others enjoy the bounty. He and Jeanette taught us to work hard and be respectful of others. You see he grew up on his father’s farm in Cooper County working tobacco fields, which was hard work. Always talked about the country school he walked to and all the life-long friends he made there. He truly missed Jeanette after she passed 2 years ago, August 29, 2015. They were married 66 years. He will be buried beside her in Memorial Park Cemetery.

He is survived by his children; Garth T. Ashpaugh, Maitland, FL, Deborah Crouch (Gary), Dyersburg, TN; Sibling, Orpha Ann Rapp (John), Boonville, MO; grandchildren, Garth R. “Chad” Ashpaugh II, Laura Licavoli (Brad), Jennifer Boles (Jack), Carrie Crouch; Great-grandchildren, Kayla Ashpaugh, Sara Ashpaugh, Amber Machen-Maershbecker (Jordan), Logan Licavoli, Josaphine Licavoli, Juliette Boles, Jenevieve Boles; and a great-great-grandchild, Dawson Maershbecker

He was preceded in death by his wife; Jeanette L. Ashpaugh, grandson, Gregory J. Ashpaugh; siblings, Robert Ashpaugh (Lena), John “Jack” Ashpaugh (Jerry), Frances Fructhel (Art), Willa Rae Morgan (Harold), Margaret Crisman (Edgar), and Verna Blackburn (Roy).

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
