Gene Taylor (Price) Gates, 86, of Conroe, Texas passed away peacefully on October 30, 2017, in Conroe, Texas. Gene was born to Jimmie Taylor and Elizabeth Ford Taylor on December 17, 1930, in Groveton, Texas. She graduated in 1948 from Groveton High School and later married J. V. (Sonny) Price. She and J. V. had two children and raised their family in Groveton. Sonny was the Trinity County Judge for 16 years and he and Gene were active in County politics, church, community and their childrens' lives. Gene worked for the U. S. Forest Service for over 30 years. Gene and J. V. were married for 33 years when J.V. passed away in 1981. Gene took early retirement from the Forest Service and moved to Conroe in 1986 to be closer to her family. In 1995, Gene married Hoover Gates. Gene and Hoover were married for 19 years, until his death in 2014. Gene spent her last years at Heritage Oaks where she enjoyed the company of many new friends, playing games and generally loving life.

Gene was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Conroe for over 30 years. She was a volunteer at the Montgomery County Hospital, now Conroe Regional, from 1987-1996. Gene felt blessed to have many wonderful friends in her Conroe community, at FUMC Conroe and in her Adult Bible Class. Gene was a Montgomery County Fair Association volunteer and was in charge of Senior Citizens Day for many years. She and Hoover had many Meandering Methodist friends and Gene made new friends easily at Heritage Oaks. She loved her Lord, loved her family, loved Conroe, loved to travel and just generally loved life.

Gene Gates is preceded in death by her parents, Jimmie and Elizabeth Taylor; her husband J. V. Price and her husband, Hoover Gates as well as her sister "by choice", Martha Derrick. Her survivors include her daughter, Brenda Standish of Houston, her son, Jimmie Price and his wife, Gina of Shenandoah; granddaughters, Scarlett Collings of Bellaire, Jaime Price Kercheval and husband Jason of The Woodlands and Jordan Price of The Woodlands; and four great-grandchildren: Scarlett's children Camden Collings, Ashlyn Collings and Caitlin Collings; and Jaime's daughter, Jenevieve Kercheval; Hoover's daughter, Sheridan Cummings and husband Robin of Shepherd and Hoover's granddaughter, Samantha Cummings of The Woodlands. Gene is also survived by numerous dear friends, including Dorothy Bell and Bernadean Walters, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends who each held a special place in her heart.
