George F. Scaptura, age 93, of Watkins Glen, NY passed away Sunday, April 27th at Bethany Manor in Horseheads, NY.

George was born on October 31st, 1920, the son of the late Rocco and Mary (Compese) Scaptura. George served in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Radioman 3rd Class from 1942 to 1946. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Business Journalism from Rider University in New Jersey. George was employed as the business manager for the Watkins Glen School District, was the Watkins Glen Village Clerk, and a reporter for the Star Gazette Advertiser and other local newspapers. George was also an avid Italian short story writer and published in the Marlin Mariner and up until recently, he still typed on an iron manual typewriter. George enjoyed organic gardening and made homemade applesauce from the apple trees in his yard. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Bowling League, the Marlin Mariners Association, the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his wife, Mary Elizabeth "BeBe" Scaptura on June 10, 2007; and his siblings, Nicholas "Nick" (Frances Criazzo) Scaptura, Frank (Helen Wasson) Scaptura, Cecilia (Patrick) DeNardo, Joseph (Ellen Bower) Scaptura, James (Marian Paradiso) Scaptura, Grace (John) Cherock, Marie C. "Mellie" (Nicholas) Spena, and Rocco "Dick" Scaptura,.

George is survived by his son, Thomas Scaptura of Endicott, NY and his daughter, Lisa Scaptura of Watkins Glen, NY; his sister in law, Judy (Smith) Scaptura; and many nieces and nephews as well as, great and great great nieces and nephews.

Friends and family may call from 6 pm to 9 pm on Wednesday, April 30th, 2014 at Haughey-Wood Funeral Home, 119 Fifth St., Watkins Glen, NY. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 am on Thursday, May 1st at St. Mary's of the Lake Church in Watkins Glen. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Watkins Glen.
