George Robert Larko, Sr., 95, husband of 50 years to Joyce Blessley Larko (1930 - 2014), passed away peacefully on July 12, 2015 at The Arbors in Manchester. George was born a proud New Yorker (in "Alphabet City") on November 11, 1919. He joined the Marine Corps on his 19th birthday, retiring as a Sergeant Major in 1963, soon after marrying Joyce. He was a veteran of WWII & the Korean Conflict but seldom spoke of it.
George worshipped at East Hartford's All Saints' Episcopal Church, and was active in Meals on Wheels, the Living History Program with senior citizens at East Hartford elementary schools, and various church based charities and events.
He enjoyed repairing cars (or anything mechanical), watching old movies, making origami figures and paper planes (to the delight of countless children). He was a gifted singer, dancer, and teller of tales. He will be most remembered for warmth, and friendliness toward all.
George is survived and honored by family: Richard Larko (Kim) of MA; Patty Faciglione (Rob) of CT, Marianne Baker of FL; Sue Larko of OK; George Robert Larko Jr. of VA; Scott Blessley (Kathy) of Tucson, AZ; Mark Blessley (Valerie) of WA.
A Memorial Service with Military Honors will be on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at 10am at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 444 Hills St., East Hartford, followed by a private burial.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to: Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, Gift Processing Administrator, 18251 Quantico Gateway Dr., Triangle, VA 22172, or Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS. 66675.
