George W. Thomas Jr. - Most people knew him as George, the "W" stands for Washington, but he has always been known to his family as June. George was the fourth of five children born to George W. Thomas Sr. and Mae Bell Thomas, ne Henderson, on August 8, 1957. He grew up in a community on the Westside of Chicago known as "K-town" on the 4200 block of W. Cullerton. He and his five siblings attended Roswell B. Mason for Elementary, Middle and Jr High School.
The neighborhood was a close knitted community and George was a very active part in his youth. His family has fond memories of George who enjoyed playing basketball and softball on the concrete courts of the playground behind his house. After Junior High, George attended Proviso East High School in Maywood, IL and went on to attend Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. While school and family took him away from the city of Chicago later in life, he remained connected with many of his childhood friends as an adult.
While at SIU George was very active with campus life and was a member of the Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. SIU is also where he met, and later married, Robin Powers. As their relationship grew, they moved to Bloomington, IL. Both George and Robin were employed at GTE. They settled into life and had two children; Jason Thomas and Felicia Thomas. George and Robin eventually went their separate ways, but, remained close.
Due to diabetes, George eventually lost his vision. However, that did not stop him from enjoying the things he loved; a good football game, hanging out at a barbeque or being with family and friends. Most recently he enjoyed a party celebrating his 60th birthday. George returned to the hands of God on December 26, 2017. He is survived by his parents; George W.
