Georgene "Gene" Schwartz, 90, died on July 15, 2017. She was born on April 29, 1927, in Hallettsville, Texas to Ida and Emil Fertsch.

Gene grew up on a farm in Lavaca County where she and her late husband Steve maintained deep roots and close friends. She and Steve married in 1945 and enjoyed a beautiful and loving life together for over 61 years. They moved to Houston in 1949 with two young daughters. Eight years later the triplets were born - two sons and another daughter completed the family.

Gene's formal education ended at an early age when she moved to Yoakum, Texas to work in the tannery and help her parents make ends meet. However, she was a lifelong learner, always inquisitive and eager to hear about all aspects of life. She was an excellent seamstress and cook, an amateur "doctor" with old home remedies, an avid gardener and above all a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a friend to all she met. She truly never met a stranger and never forgot a face or name. Her door was always open to listen and/or give advice along with a delicious bite of something homemade.

Gene is survived by her children Nelda Womack and husband Bob, Peggy Sutherland and husband Barry, Gary Schwartz and wife Barbara, and Gail McBride and eleven grandchildren - Sandy Hill, Sarah and Sean Sullivan, Bryan Pennington, Leslie and Matt Levine, Stephen Schwartz, Chad and Shaina Schwartz, Chase Schwartz, Ben Cravens, Paige Schwartz, Jennifer Randle and Kimmy McBride along with fourteen great-grandchildren. She was a special "Mama" to all of the family and to many young children who came for a cookie or a hug.
She is predeceased by her husband Steve, her parents, brother Marvin, her son Glenn and granddaughter Brandy.
Gene and Steve joined Holy Cross Lutheran Church in 1960 where they laid a foundation of faith and family and gave relentless time and love to the church.

To our special mother, we honor your discipline, your sweetness and your strength of character. We watched and learned from you every day, life's hard lessons and how to face them with grace and love.

A special, loving thanks to mom's caregivers, Sonya and Vanessa Rodgers, and Blue Star Hospice Inc.
