Groton, Georgia "Irene" Knapp Watson, 93 passed peacefully on Friday June 9, 2017. Irene being a native of Baltimore, Maryland and Goucher College Alumni lived life to its fullest always seeking new adventures. She was the surviving widow of Harry A. Watson, Sr. a career United States Coast Guard WW II Veteran. Living the life of a military family Irene was the homemaker with three children and often was employed wherever home would be as a military family. She is survived by two of those three children, Harry Watson of Groton and Dorothy Thompson of Ashaway, RI. Lois Sanford recently predeceased her. Irene also considered Richard Cavan (now of Arizona) her fourth child. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren. The past 52 years of Irene's life was lived in Southeastern Connecticut where she retired from a career with the State of Connecticut as an income maintenance supervisor in 1986. Most of those years were spent in Montville with the remaining years in Groton. In both communities, she was active in the respective senior centers. She was a member of Quaker Hill Baptist Church and spent time at Camp Wightman in Griswold. Irene also was proud to be a member of The Red Hat Society and the Eastern Star. Irene was an avid reader, card player, sewed, knitted, bird watched, and traveled. In her 80's she picked up painting and took a transcontinental train trip across Canada with a friend. Irene loved to go out to lunch and explore places she had never been. She always was looking for an excuse to get out of the house and do something. In the past few years she traveled to Chicago, San Antonio, Texas, Buffalo, NY, Port Alegany, PA, and Baltimore, MD. While with us, Irene expressed an objection to an obituary even being written about her. The decision to publish this was made out of respect for her by her family because she was a great woman and deserves people to be informed as such.
